Lately, I've seen a growing number of "AI Designer" profiles.
Sounds futuristic. But 9 times out of 10, it’s a fancy way of saying: “I know how to type weirdly poetic prompts into Midjourney.”
Let’s be clear:
AI is a tool. Not a job title.
Using Figma doesn’t make you a UX designer. Using Photoshop doesn’t make you an artist. Using AI doesn’t make you a designer. It makes you... a person using a tool. Cool. But let’s not confuse the menu with the meal.
Yes, you can get beautiful images. No, they don’t magically solve design problems, communicate brand value, or convert users.
Design is strategy, taste, intent, hierarchy, storytelling. AI can help.
But if your entire portfolio looks like a sci-fi opera starring chrome heads — we have a problem.
AI can support great design.
But if your portfolio was entirely generated while you made coffee — you might be more of a barista than a designer.
